Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) was born in Nurs eastern part of the Ottoman Empire. He studied religious sciences in childhood is a provision for later life. He was concerned with the state of the backward Muslims at that time. Thus, he proposed a system of education which he described as Madrasah al – Zahra. Thought it was brought for the first time in Istanbul in 1907. In Madrasah al- Zahra will be integrated religious education and modern science within a single system. Modern science and theology will be complementary. This is to achieve happiness and welfare in the Moslem societies. In the Madrasah al – Zahra which he aspired was to gather scholars of religion and science as well as the Sufis. They can engage in dialogue and mutual understanding between each other. The education is a very important thing, to combat the ignorance. Moslems had been kept away from understanding the Qur’an and practice its contents. That is done by the enemies of Islam. Therefore, Madrasah al – Zahra aspired to fully support the teaching of the Qur’an. With the education system Madrasah al – Zahra was going to put together the various tribes and peoples that had been broken to pieces. The thought of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi is still relevant until today. The Islamic higher education in Indonesia today is a rollicking turned into a university, whose goal is to integrate the science of religion and general science or science as conceived by Said Nursi. In a university that will occur dialogue among scholars, intellectuals and the mutashawwif. Hopefully, amen.
